The popular Israeli search engine Walla is the subject of an investigation by the Israeli Police Department’s National Anti-Fraud Squad.
The investigation was launched this past Monday, the 19th of December. It centers on allegations that Walla posted advertisements for the illegal online casino sites King Solomon and Online Casino Dealer. It is illegal for Israelis to gamble at online casinos that are not specifically endorsed by the government.
The Anti-Fraud Squad raided Walla’s office in Tel Aviv in an attempt to recover information related to the illegal casino advertisements. Investigators seized documents and detained three employees.
Senior Police officials told the press that Walla CEO Ilan Yisraeli would be called in for questioning in the upcoming days.
Walla is owned by Haaretz, a leading Israeli newspaper, and by the communications giant Bezeq International. People said that it was unlikely that owners of either Bezeq International or Haaretz would be called in for questioning, since there is so far no evidence that they were directly involved with the online casino advertisements on the Walla websites.
The
Walla investigation is part of a broader attempt, initiated by
Ministry of Justice in cooperation with the Police Department, to
stamp out illegal online casino activity in Israel. At a recent
meeting between Attorney General Menahem Mazuz, State Prosecutor
Eran Shendar, and representatives of the Police Department, it was
decided that the government would begin to take harsh measures
against violations of the anti-gambling laws. They will begin by
targeting all venues that publish illegal online casino
advertisements. The next move will be aimed at credit card
companies that do business with online casinos. |
